Longlegs (2024)

Worried when Longlegs started that it was all going to be in 4:3 format like A Ghost Story, which was shit, I was nonetheless excited for the serial killer horror come thriller with a Nic Cage performance people had raved about. Fortunately the film only does that irritating aspect ratio in patches, and I liked its aura fairly quickly once I knew that.

Maika Munroe is superb as FBI Agent Lee Harker, but the shadow of Nic Cage’s titular, serial killer terror Longless lurks ominously in the film’s background. It’s a detective thriller with creeping inevitability, which is well shot.

Cage has been in some stinkers, which I’ve talked about before, but I do love him and Longlegs is certainly a bravado performance. He looks like the bastard child of the Joker and Pete Burns, with his made up, bloated face. The character has original Beetlejuice screen time and that’s probably for the best. Much like Bruce the shark in Jaws, it’s better to have the threat than over exposure to the film’s antagonist.

Unfortunately while promising and atmospheric, Longlegs plays out pretty predictably, and doesn’t make a lot of sense towards the end. A bit of a let-down.

Bedsit it?

Two good performances, sadly, do not a classic movie make. Longlegs is technically admirable, and looks good, I’d recommend seeing it but am not promising you’ll love it. 6/10
