The American Barbecue Showdown (2020- )
Sometimes, not all of the time but sometimes, you just need a little positivity in your life. There is something very American about positive affirmation- us Brits aren’t great at this for two reasons: we sound like we’re not being nice even when we are and often we’re not being nice. One thing I love about America is that largely they are polite and upbeat, and don't sound false even when they are being so.
This holds particularly true down south. I’d love to return to Louisiana, Alabama, Carolina and visit Texas. Especially for their varying barbecue food. Might wait a few terms though…
The American Barbecue Showdown is, if you’re into fire and meat, absolutely perfect feel-good foodie fun. Although prepped with exactly the same competitive reality TV show cliches you expect, it never feels over the top. Eight very good BBQ masters from a range of backgrounds compete under constantly changing conditions to make the best meal, and someone is eliminated each episode.
Each individual is treated with respect, there’s no Simon Cowell here belittling people. The closest they have to that creepy cunt is judge Melissa Cookston and the seven time American BBQ champion is not even negative, just honest and good fun to boot. The other judge Kevin Bludso is high octane enthusiasm, and compliments her drier style. They change hosts between seasons 1 and 2 and honestly I don’t think they even need a host, Melissa and Kevin are a brilliant double act. Saying that, from the second season Michelle Buteau is a wonderful emotional keystone in the presenting role.
They support each other and even when people leave there’s so much love and respect between the contestants it’s utterly heartwarming.
Oh my God the meat; meat probably the show’s best character. Much like MeatEater, while the rest of the show is entertaining the main reason to watch is for that delicious flamed flesh. I doubt any vegans clicked on this link but if you have and are still reading, then you know you want to repent and accept brisket as your one calling in life. Go see a butcher for a prescription to cure you.
