I have developed a begrudging respect for people who straight up admit they don’t watch subtitled films because it’s basically reading and they can’t be arsed. While obviously they’re wrong, and missing out on loads, why force yourself? Why choose to do something which you know is going to annoy you.

What has worried me is watching the spark go out in people when it comes to film and TV, people who were adventurous and would fucking read*. It is something I never thought would happen to me. As people get older they naturally navigate towards what is easiest, what they think they will like- without thinking about it. Tired people don’t challenge choices and the more and more tired you get of life, the simpler your choices will become.

It started happening to me, and I noticed.

Black Tide was part of my break the Sisyphus mould. By which I mean try and push a different rock up an increasingly difficult but crucially different hill of apathy. Maybe I just need to shrug and say “yeah I like rocks and hills”.

Vincent Cassel never gives less than his all, and he is a sexy man if you like violently angry. His character in this murder mystery (oh yeah there’s a film I’m supposed to be writing about) might be a useless idiot with an alcohol problem, or a genius. With an alcohol problem. I’m certainly nobody to judge alcohol issues and you’re reading my stuff so I’ll leave that ambiguity to you.

A boy goes missing and Cassel drinks his way toward the truth. There’s not a lot going beyond a good performance. It’s TV stuff and the reason I’ve waited this long to tell you that is because all the bullshit I just waffled is more important to your life than Black Tide. Which is to say not at all important, but within that scale.

Bedsit it?

Here’s your rock, choose a fucking hill. 5/10

*If you won’t watch subtitled films but are reading this, think about that.
