The Blair Witch Documentary (2024)

“Just because something looks like a documentary, smells like a documentary, acts like a documentary it does not mean it is a documentary. What we’re doing is flying in the face of convention.”

This accompaniment to The Blair Witch Project Blu-Ray release last year, celebrating a quarter of a century since its theatrical release, despite being an extra is possibly the best addition to a disk I’ve ever seen.

The Blair Witch Documentary is a reminder to not only see or rewatch the brilliant, genre altering film, and a kick up the arse to aspiring film makers. It is also a comprehensive covering of what it took to make such a small film which deservedly went wild with the hype.

Packed with fascinating facts, anecdotes and insight, this wonderful film really gives an inception to reception and beyond look into how The Blair Witch Project became the phenomenon it was, and excellent film it remains.

The first cut was two and a half hours, they weren’t sure what the original scary element was (witch, ghost, alien, beast) and the marketing was all borne of a natural, authentic approach to how the team made the film.

Sure they got a bit lucky with the internet fandom and lore which landed with the horror family at the time, but the achievement of this film is down to the makers trusting their instincts and boy did it pay off. Watching it unfold is exciting.

The Blair Witch Documentary is a superb as a stand alone lens into creating cinema, but a must see for fans of the horror great.
