The Simpsons: Oh C’mon All Ye Faithful (2024)
Oh C’mon All Ye Faithful is a Christmas special from The Simpsons. Family Guy have long done seasonal specials, South Park seems to be solely specials these days (they are very good, though) and Futurama is just The Simpsons in space, like The Jetsons was to The Flintstones. It doesn’t mean I don’t care, but I hold less love for the spin-off so fuck knows what they’re doing.
Derren Brown centres the story. Derren Brown?! Didn’t know he was even a thing in the States. My girlfriend and I went to see him live and he’s captivating and crafty and yes there’s a lot of “how the hell did he do that?”, but the big number at the centre of the show was essentially grandiose gaslighting.
Derren deigns to dupe Springfield into being better people, and guess which sad slob he selects to brainwash? Everybody's favourite Duff-supper, Homer J. Simpson. Amusingly, if predictably, Homer is immune to influence, in any conventional way. Derren fails to fulfil his ambitions and things go differently in a Treehouse of Happy, abstract way.
Packed with contemporary references and in jokes, as every cartoon these days is, there’s a wink and a nod in every minute. Oh C’mon All Ye Faithful is hopeful, wholesome, mirthful and carries the subversive Simpsons comedic cynicism, but I found much like a lot of the last twenty years of The Simpsons and ten of Family Guy, there’s nothing which sticks long in the mind.
If you like The Simpsons, Oh C’mon All Ye Faithful is a nice, extended episode of a family who have proved their endearing ability to retain attention over thirty five years. Anyone who doesn’t like The Simpsons probably hates people, and fun, and love and puppies. Some laughs and touching moments. Give it a watch ya Grinch! 6/10
