Two Distant Strangers (2020)
Learn to see me as a brother instead of two distant strangers; Two Distant Strangers is an ode to Tupac Shakur. Love. Sounds easy, love, but Travon Free's short, award winning film makes a very good show of how it might not be. Some things will never change.
"I'm not afraid of death, I just don't want to be reincarnated."
But reincarnated young black male Carter is, as he bashes against the incredibly unsubtly named Officer Merk, in a fever dream, again and again just trying to live.
"What you learn, you can’t take it down."
How do you feel? Watching Carter lose in every way to a metaphor for the system and white Police in particular, the repetition makes its point.
He'd rather die like a man, than live like a coward (pretty sure he borrowed that one, ol’ Tuppence), but what gets Carter?
Propped up by two excellent performances (Joey Bada$$ and Andrew Howard) Two Distant Strangers is heartbreaking. It doesn’t take God to judge this now, even God ain’t this stupid. When you wipe your eyes see it clearly.
That’s just the way it is. Two Distant Strangers won’t tell you anything new, but it will make you feel, and that’s important. Will some things change? 8/10
